Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) uses rigid or hard contact lenses which reshape the cornea of the eye temporarily when worn overnight. This allows light to focus accurately on the retina, resulting in clearer vision without glasses or contact lenses during the day. It is one of the best methods of myopia control and also provides a lot of freedom as you don’t need to wear anything to see. All of our branches are equipped with topographers and axial length machines which are essential in providing accurate measurements for the OrthoK lens and to measure the length of the eye respectively. Axial length is a crucial part of myopia control which helps us determine if your child’s myopia progression is being controlled well.

Can Anyone Use OrthoK

While OrthoK is a great solution for myopia control and convenience – not everyone is a good fit. Make sure to book in for an eye test and myopia control consultation (bulk billed with medicare) to see if your child is eligible to wear OrthoK lenses. Our optometrists will look at the prescription, eye health, history and general health and determine whether orthoK is a good fit for you.

Side Effects

With any contact lenses there are definitely potential side effects and risks associated – the same with OrthoK. However these risks are very preventable and rare when good contact lens hygiene is maintained and cleaning instructions are followed properly. These instructions are all explained in detail at the fitting appointment. It is generally also recommended to change the OrthoK lens every 2 years to minimise any complications with the lens result.

Orthokeratology Patients

Ortho-K is a good option for adults and children. Still, it is particularly beneficial for children with myopia, as it can slow down the condition’s progression. The lenses also benefit people with mild to moderate myopia and astigmatism.

If you’re interested in Ortho-K, talk to your optometrist to see if you’re a good candidate for the treatment.

Orthokeratology is a safe and effective option for correcting vision problems without surgery. It is particularly useful for children with myopia and adults who are physically active and don’t want to wear glasses or contacts during the day. However, it’s important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your optometrist to determine if Ortho-K is right for you.

At Myopia Control Optometrists, our experienced optometrists can help you determine if Ortho-K is right for you. Contact us today to schedule an appointment and learn more about our orthokeratology services.
